“The Hat” series began on paper (early 2016) and then moved onto canvas panel. I’ve stuck with the panels since the summer of 2016, but this morning I was checking out the paintings of an artist I like (after he liked one of my paintings on Instagram !) and the way he works with oil on aluminum – all squishy and slithery – made me want to go back to a smooth surface. I ‘primed’ the paper here with gel medium.

Series

First there was “The Hat” (January 2016) and then, three months later, I tempted fate with “No Hat” wondering if there would be shock waves and public outcry. There was not! Whatever it is that propels this sweet spot of sales (a size+price+quality equation) is able to withstand detours into themed series within the 11 x 14″ series of contemporary portrait paintings.

When I do a painting that is a departure from my typical subject, I’m not really thinking about whether it will be a series or not. Surprisingly, reaction doesn’t play much of a role in whether I want to paint the same subject again. In fact, sometimes when a painting gets a lot of reaction when I post it on FaceBook, I don’t want to do another one like it. There’s something about having a unique, stand alone painting that’s very appealing. Also, after 30+ years as the singer and lyricist in a band that didn’t set out to be universally liked, I find it easy enough not to do what people seem to want me to do.

Most of the series seem to finish up around 10 or so, but “Ruff Collar” is currently up to 18 and “Sunday Morning” is at 4. I have no idea whether I’ll add to either at any point.

I know people want more astronauts (“Affirmative”), but unless I feel like painting astronauts there won’t be any!

“Pioneers of Aviation”
“Hoodie”
“Scuba”
“Landscape”
“Animals Available” (baboons, foxes, wolves)
“Ruff Collar”
“Headphones”
“Sunday Morning”
“Braces & Halter Top”
“Affirmative” (astronauts)
Orange Jacket” (below)
“Bathing Cap”

Yes, true story. Are you wondering what you’re still doing here and why you’re not over there buying a whole bunch of these 11×14 beauties? Me too. Here you go… Jean’s Facebook page. Instagram & FaceBook Testimonials!

“I bought a painting! @jeansmithpainter is the artist and she has many more beautiful portraits. They’re a steal at $100! Go check them out right now and get one (or two, or three). And I must say, the painting is even more beautiful in person. I’m so pleased!”

“It arrived yesterday. I must commend you on your packing. It was so secure! And the painting is even better in person! I love love love it. The colors are juicy and she is just gorgeous.”

“Basically, I saw the art on Instagram, and was directed to her current available pieces on Facebook. Then I struggled to choose just one, emailed her about the one I wanted, sent the $$ via PayPal and voila! I am the proud owner of an amazing painting! I highly recommend it. So easy and such fantastic work.”

Contact me by email to confirm that the painting you want is still available before paying.

Several of my all time favorite paintings are still available.

Why are some of my all-time favorite paintings still available? I figure it’s because of when I originally posted them on my regular FaceBook page where 99% of purchases happen. Sales slow at the end and beginning of the month and during major distractions good and bad. Here are a handful of my pre-September favorites.

Collectors tip: I post first on FaceBook where they sometimes sell within the first five minutes which slows me down from posting them here, on the monthly page. I tend to put them on Instagram last, two or three at a time.
