“Yesterday was the 25th birthday of [one of my kids’ friends… an artist] and she came for dinner. I showed her the new additions to my “wall of women” [below]. I was explaining to her how amazing you are and everything that you have accomplished. I was telling her about Mecca Normal and she looked at me with crazy eyes and started singing “Man thinks Woman”. She loves that song! She was so excited that the person who painted all the amazing strong woman on my wall was the same person singing a song that she listens to all the time …she wasn’t even born in the eighties.”
“Man Thinks Woman” original
“Man Thinks Woman” live in Montreal, 1996 as part of a feminist medley with “Strong White Male” and “I Walk Alone” recorded for air on CBC’s national radio show Brave New Waves
This family of four (the other teen son took the photo) in Wisconsin created a Halloween masterpiece!
Such a wild ride this past year (NYT article, CBC interview), but you know you’ve really “made it” when people start dressing up as your paintings for Halloween!
I added a page of photos that buyers of my paintings have sent me. It’s a great resource for how to frame or otherwise display my paintings.
The floating frame is a favorite for the large (16 x 20″) paintings. They look great in the set of 6!

It was a real thrill to receive this statement in an email from a former director and chief curator of five art and design museums (including a Smithsonian, a Guggenheim, and the Whitney) after the New York Times Magazine article came out.
“I think your paintings are just terrific in how you capture character so well and what a great colorist you are!” – Barbara Bloemink, 2021
She bought these three 11 x 14″ paintings for her home in NYC, where I believe she conducts art tours.
I worked with these two buyers one-on-one to create these LARGE (16 x 20″ acrylic on canvas with 1/2″ profile) groupings of recent paintings.
This first group of four is going to Toronto. Initially, I showed the client four paintings (in messenger) based on themes she was interested in. I was able to show her options in two cases. She made her selection, but the following morning, she messaged me to say what resonated with her about my paintings in general was drama and mystery. I took a look at what we’d put together the night before and saw we hadn’t really satisfied that mandate. She also mentioned that she’d seen my band perform in Toronto back in the 80s or 90s, that, as a university student. Evidently, she’d frequently been at shows at the Rivoli, taking photos for the campus newspaper. This gave me a sense of boldness, recognizing that I’d been too tentative in my first selection for her.
Adding The Singer changed everything for both of us! Next I switched out a Hoodie with a rather neutral expression for the Bathing Cap and Phone, which is both dramatic and mysterious. The astronaut I chose in the second pick is looser with more visible emotions. I swapped a pink haired Angry Woman in Rock for the deeper mahogany hair to add a weight to the group. It’s hard to describe the difference in their expressions, but I’d say this one is perhaps no stranger to expressing her anger, whereas the one I originally picked, before I knew the buyer and I were connected through music, was less threatening looking.

LARGE “Bathing Cap and Phone #13″ (16 x 20″ acrylic on canvas 1/2” profile) $600 USD SOLD

LARGE “Angry Woman in Rock #42″ (16 x 20″ acrylic on canvas 1/2” profile) $600 USD SOLD
This next collection is also going to Toronto, where simply looking at the buyer’s FB photos allowed me to see paintings on the walls of her home. I knew I could go bold here! She wanted one of the blue hats, an astronaut and a singer, so I selected them based on a good flow of color, expression and composition.

At some point, M decided to pay an extra $50 USD for my $100 USD paintings, which I find subversive and inspiring! She works in film, so of course I imagine her (eventual) stay at the residency will involve film and possibly a film about the residency and/or how to subvert the flow of funds in creative ways, how (and why) to buy property to make available to artists working on projects that intend to change the world! See? I told you she inspires me!
“This time last year I was really struggling & could only daydream about collecting. Your spectrum of work (writing, music, painting) has motivated me on a number of levels & sincerely makes the lives of my household better everyday.” – M
All sales above my expenses ($1000 USD a month) go towards opening the Free Artist Residency for Progressive Social Change!
